Poker is a card game in which players place bets based on the probability of their cards beating those of other players. The game has a wide variety of variants but all share some core features. Poker is often played with a single standard deck of 52 cards. Each player starts with 2 cards that are hidden from other players – these are called hole or pocket cards. There is a round of betting starting with the player to the left of the dealer before any players can check (pass). The first round of betting is initiated by mandatory bets called blinds, which are placed in the pot by the players to the left of the dealer.

After the pre-flop betting phase, 3 additional cards are dealt face-up in the center of the table. These are known as the flop. The best 5-card poker hand wins the pot. Sometimes there are ties. In these cases the highest card breaks the tie (e.g., five aces beats four of a kind).

In poker, as in life, it is not always the best hand that wins. It may be a player’s tenacity and courage that defeats an opponent who holds a superior hand. A player’s bluffing also may allow him to win a hand even when his own cards are not the best. A player’s experience and knowledge of the game also can help him improve his chances of winning.
